Athletic and Osasuna are on the verge of lifting the first title of the 24-25 season as they prepare to face off in the final of the Euskal Herriko Txapela on August 3rd.
This tournament, in its eighth edition, pits the top two teams from Euskal Herria based on points earned in derbies from the previous season. Athletic and Osasuna emerged victorious over Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alavés, respectively, to reach the final. The venue for the final is yet to be confirmed, with Lasesarre or San Mamés being likely options.
The Euskal Herriko Txapela, organized by Euskal Herria Kirola, has gained popularity and prestige over the years.
Last year, Osasuna claimed the title by defeating Real Sociedad 3-1 at the Stadium Gal in Irun. Athletic aims to add a third Euskal Herriko Txapela title to their record, having won in 2018 and 2022 by overcoming Real Sociedad 1-0 on both occasions. Osasuna, the defending champions, seek to maintain their regional dominance.
The final venue is still under negotiation, with Lasesarre and San Mamés being considered.
San Mamés, with its larger capacity, is the preferred choice to accommodate more fans. The decision will be made in the coming days, ensuring an exciting match at one of these stadiums.
Following the Euskal Herriko Txapela final, Athletic will face high-level European opponents.
On August 7th, they will play against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at the Bescot Stadium in Walsall, followed by a match against Bundesliga runners-up Stuttgart at the MHP Arena on August 10th. The upcoming matches promise to be challenging tests for the team after the regional final.
